Website Navigation And SEO

The most important element of any website or blog is CONTENT. Unique content is always going to be king. The second most important is NAVIGATION. A well organized website allows your visitors to find what they are looking for quickly. If a site has a poor navigation system it reduces the likelihood potential customers or clients will stay on your site. Well structured navigation will also help the search engines to index the pages throughout your site.

Planning your website structure prior to developing can help eliminate the need for restructuring later on. To create an effective navigation system ask yourself these questions first:

  • Who am I building the site for? (Clients, Customers, Informational, etc)
  • What do I want to accomplish by building a site?
  • Where do I want my visitors to ultimately end up on my site?
  • When a visitor shows up will they find what they need?
  • Why did a visitor come to my site?

These questions, when answered, will help you determine what type of content you need/want and help you organize the content through navigation.

Navigation does not just refer to menus on your website or blog, it also refers to links throughout your site in the content or articles themselves. These links are part of your “Internal Linking System” and are essential to a well structured website. When setting up internal links think about the key words and phrases people will use to search for you or your products and use these within your links to assist in SEO also.

  • Invisible text: Having key words or phrases hidden by using the same background color as the text color.

The 5 Best SEO (Search Engine Optimization) Tips

Thanks for visiting. Please comment below.

[ad#Google Large_text_only]

I will give my opinion of  the order of importance. My opinions are based on careful observation and 10+ years of experience.

1. First and foremost, unique, relevant, original content. Content is king. Without unique content that your readers will find useful your website or blog will carry no weight in the search engines.

2. Title tag. The title tag is the tag that will show up at the very top of your browser window. This tag should use very specific key words and phrases that relate to the individual pages you are optimizing.

3. Website or blog structure. When talking about structure I am referring to layout, navigation, proper css, proper xhtml,  proper html5 (if used), and any other code properly structured.

4. Headings must be key word rich, not stuffed and must be tagged with the correct h tags. Below I have laid out the six proper heading tags.

<h1>This is heading 1</h1>

<h2>This is heading 2</h2>

<h3>This is heading 3</h3>

<h4>This is heading 4</h4>

<h5>This is heading 5</h5>
<h6>This is heading 6</h6>

5. Links Inbound and outbound. Inbound links are links coming from other sites on the web. These links must come from sites that are in some way related to your site and have a decent page rank of at least pr3 or better. Having links from just any site are not always beneficial to your site SEO.
Outbound links should have some use to your readers. If there is no benefit to your readers there is no sense in having them anyway.

These are just some very basic SEO tips but in my opinion they are the most important. There is much more to SEO.

Google Caffeine Update Is Complete 06-08 2010

The web has changed and so has the way Google indexes and serves up web pages. Read the evidence in Google’s official webmaster blog.

http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2010/06/our-new-search-index-caffeine.html

After reading this article in Google’s blog you may have a better understanding of the importance of real-time relevant information that comes from regularly updated sites such as news sites and BLOGS.

Yes, blogs have become a very important factor in SEO for your main site. Creating links in your blog that relate to information in your main site can be very beneficial not only to the indexing of your blog but also the indexing and positioning (SERPS) of your main site also through relevant linking.

Social media has also become a perfect place for search engines to index real-time relevant information also. Many people build main websites and never change content. This means the information in these pages can become outdated and not as relevant as information posted in a twitter post, on a facebook fan page, or on your linkedin pages.

The Caffeine update is complete and will change the way your pages are indexed and ranked in the search engines.

The Importance Of Web Site Structure And Framework For SEO

Web site layout and structure has become a critical factor in (SEO) Search Engine Optimization.

Search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing have changed the manner in which they index your pages. Site structure now plays a roll in optimization of your website or blog and helps in determining the relevance of the information within your site. Below we will discuss the different facets of construction and structure.

CSS Table-less Structure

CSS stands for cascading style sheets. This is code that separates the layout from the content. In old school design everything was laid out in tables and text was formatted within the page itself. This made it more difficult for search engine spiders (bots) to decipher the relevant content from code.

h tags

Example – <h3>Some Text</h3>

H tags also known as  heading tags are used to help depict the importance of information within your article or post. Your h tags should also include relevant key words or phrases that depict what the article or post is about. These tags carry more weight with the  search engine algorithms and basically tell the spiders what information will be in the article or post. There are many other factors also analyzed by the spiders at this point.

In our next post we will discuss the importance of properly structured navigation.

SEO Is More Than Search Engine Results Page Positioning

Creating your brand and being recognized as an authority in your field is also a part of optimization. Sure, positioning in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) is important but it is also important after you are found, to be recognized as a leader in your industry.

In traditional marketing it’s important to have recognition through repetition. The recognition comes from constant publicity in as many places as possible. On the web this is done through blogs, social networking, forums, e-mail campaigns and other online marketing streams.

Creating Your Brand

Branding is a visual aspect of marketing. Large Corporations like Niki and McDonald’s are recognized immediately by logos and colors because they have stuck to a particular look and you have seen it everywhere thousands of times. The same goes for marketing your business. Once you have created your brand, stay with it.

How To Become Recognized As An Authority

Freely give well written, well thought out, relevant content to your readers. Place your information in as many places as possible. Several ways to become an authority online in your field and become recognized are to; have a blog that you contribute to regularly, write articles for e-zines, post in forums that you have good relevant knowledge, and  post to social networking sites.

This can also help your link building campaign. If people feel you know what you are talking about they will link to you and recommend you to others.
