Website Navigation And SEO

The most important element of any website or blog is CONTENT. Unique content is always going to be king. The second most important is NAVIGATION. A well organized website allows your visitors to find what they are looking for quickly. If a site has a poor navigation system it reduces the likelihood potential customers or clients will stay on your site. Well structured navigation will also help the search engines to index the pages throughout your site.

Planning your website structure prior to developing can help eliminate the need for restructuring later on. To create an effective navigation system ask yourself these questions first:

  • Who am I building the site for? (Clients, Customers, Informational, etc)
  • What do I want to accomplish by building a site?
  • Where do I want my visitors to ultimately end up on my site?
  • When a visitor shows up will they find what they need?
  • Why did a visitor come to my site?

These questions, when answered, will help you determine what type of content you need/want and help you organize the content through navigation.

Navigation does not just refer to menus on your website or blog, it also refers to links throughout your site in the content or articles themselves. These links are part of your “Internal Linking System” and are essential to a well structured website. When setting up internal links think about the key words and phrases people will use to search for you or your products and use these within your links to assist in SEO also.

What Is A SERP And Why Should You Care?

If you own a business and have a website you should know what they are and care about SERPs, the acronym for Search Engine Results Page. The result of  a word or phrase query in a search engine like Google, Yahoo, or Bing is a SERP.

When a person searches the web they type key words in a search box in hopes of getting the results they are looking for. The search engine will sift through thousands, tens of thousands, if not millions of websites to give the most relevant, and up to date information through it’s algorithms.

In the past few months the SERPs have been quite erratic for some sites. Pages have been up, down and all over the board. Speculation has it that the Google caffeine update is the culprit. Matt Cutts: Gadgets, Google, and SEO discusses the update on his blog in a video interview with Mike McDonald from WebProNews. The update has been taking place for several months now but the dust still hasn’t settled.

This is a major update for Google and should be watched very closely by the SEO industry. One of the factors I have noticed is how the structure of websites has a direct effect on SERP. Pages that ranked well in 2007 – 2008 and early 2009 that were built with what now is old school technology, are falling behind in the search results.

In my opinion, the algorithm changes that are in the caffeine update directly reflect site structure and load time of sites. The more sites search engines have to query, the faster they need to access the data within those sites. If the code is heavy and disorganized it slows down the indexing process. This is having a direct affect on the SERP.

Slow Loading Pages Will Affect SEO

There are many factors that will have an effect on your SEO. Having clean, fast loading pages with well optimized images will give you a better chance of getting ranked higher in the search engines. When it becomes more difficult for spiders (robots) to index your pages they tend to spend less time on your site, thus indexing fewer pages

Keeping your code lean and clean makes it much easier for search engines to index and it also will help keep potential clients and customers on your site. If pages take a long time to load, a potential customer may just click away from your site never to return. Remember, first impressions are lasting impressions.

Too manywebsite enhancing scripts can have an adverse effect on SEO. Sometimes it is better to have less “pretty” and more efficient and to the point code. Lets face it, the main reason a business has a website is to get their point across. When a client or customer is searching for an answer to a particular question whether it be information on a product or an informative article you have written, they want to be able to locate it quickly.

Make sure the code is necessary for your site. Ask yourself this question. Will it help sell my product or service? If the answer is yes, then use it. If the answer is no, take a close look at what the code does for your site and decide whether or not it is worth the lag in load time.

Marketing with video

With increased internet speeds for the majority of us, video has become a viable option for marketing on the web. Statistics show about 28% of time U.S. people spend on Google is using YouTube and 35% globally is spent on YouTube. That is a massive amount of time spent viewing video. Many people are very visual verses textual and that is an audience every marketer should use to there advantage.

When marketing with video, as with any marketing campaign, you need to ask yourself why do I need or want video on my website or on other sites?  What is my primary objective? Some aspects of a primary objective may be link generation,  keyword or key phrase targeted content, additional public recognition, a new product or service, or maybe a combination of all or some of the above mentioned.
